Dear Future Intern,
As you embark on your journey with City-NetPlusArts, I wanted to share some lessons and experiences from my own internship during the summer of 2023. Get ready for an incredible learning adventure that will not only grow your professional skills but also broaden your horizons in ways you might not expect.
One of the most rewarding aspects of my time at City-NetPlusArts was the diverse range of responsibilities I had the opportunity to take on. As a non-profit in the disaster prevention space, my responsibilities ranged from crafting detailed reports to developing captivating marketing materials and engaging in creative projects, every day brought a new chance to learn and grow. These tasks not only improved my technical abilities but also honed my time management and collaboration skills.

What truly set this internship apart was its location in Kobe, Japan. The experience of working in an international environment challenged me to adapt and thrive in a multicultural setting. Cultural awareness became more than just a buzzword – it was a daily practice. Embracing the local customs, navigating language differences, and respecting different perspectives were all essential parts of my job.

Perhaps the most unexpected lesson was the power of creative thinking. My time at City-NetPlusArts encouraged me to explore innovative solutions and push the boundaries of my imagination. This mindset was developed by the dynamic work culture and the city itself, which has a history of creative displays. It also hosts one of the greatest tragedies in Japanese natural disaster history. The 1995 Great Awajji Earthquake shook Kobe and left a permanent mark on this city. It also became the birthplace of creative organizations to thrive and forever change the way disaster prevention is viewed all the way to today.
As you begin your own internship, remember to approach every task with enthusiasm and an open mind. Embrace challenges as opportunities for growth, and don’t hesitate to seek guidance from your other CAPI interns. Your time with City-NetPlusArts has the potential to be transformative, providing you with skills that extend far beyond your internship term.
I also wanted to share my experiences in the form of a video, so I filmed, edited, and voiced a 90-second video about my experience as an intern in Japan.
This video also shares how I got to where I am today, my typical tasks at work, and what my daily routine looks like.
Although this provides a typical day in my life, there were so many unique and amazing experiences during my time here. I am so excited for you to embark on this amazing journey of self-discovery, while also creating a meaningful contribution to the community of Kobe.
There is no doubt that there will be ups and downs, as I have personally faced some of the toughest challenges of my entire life while being away from home in Canada, however, what I can guarantee is that you will leave a better person than you arrived. You will push yourself in new ways that you have never challenged before, and that alone is a beautiful thing.
Lastly, I will leave off with a future intern document that I created for the office but has lots of use cases for daily life as well.
Dear Future Intern, prepare for some of the best memories of your life, and remember, although my internship may be over you can always contact me if you have any questions. (Klkristiansen00@gmail.com)
Thank you to everyone who made this experience possible, it was truly the best summer of my life.
– Kai
